Raf Simpson
Raf Simpson is an abstract painter based in New York City. Raf’s signature format can be characterized by grand, minimalist, large-scale works of art. These paintings come to life through the layering of acrylics, delicate touches of oil, charcoal, pencil, and the incorporation of wax. Simpson’s creative process is derived from putting everything on the canvas which often starts with either a singular sharp shape, or a thin black line. His method allows for the gradual emergence of sections, formation of a color pallet, and the convergence of all design elements. To Raf's art, imperfection is key. The imperfect colors, shapes, and corners allow for everything to then form organically.
Raf Simpson’s overall style and influence is derived from his love of the creative process. This process includes telling stories, and finding ways to convey an idea so that it can be understood in the most simplistic manner. Raf's work showcases an impressive scale that captivates many viewers. The sheer magnitude of his abstract work leaves a lasting impression, immersing observers in the meaning of life. His vision goes beyond the surface, delving into the depths of existence itself. Simpson’s paintings explore the fundamental question of “why are we here” and the vast mysteries of the universe. His large-scale paintings are inspired by architecture, mid-century modern design as well as his successful wife interior / furniture designer Lauren Bakarian of Bakarian Studio.
Raf Simpson was born and raised in Barbados. Throughout his childhood, Raf was exposed to art by a family of inspiring role models. His great grandmother Sylvia Brett, great grandfather Harry Roy, and Sylvia’s sister Dorothy Brett all had outstanding involvement and achievements with art throughout their lifetimes. In Barbados, he was also surrounded by school, bikes, surfing, and no working television. From a young age, Raf worked to turn his weaknesses into strengths, allowing him to develop skills such as a good memory. His art-filled family, places and the train station that was renovated into his home have helped to shape his childhood and the person he is today.
After university, Raf Simpson’s journey led him to the vibrant streets of New York City where he started his own tech company. It was in New York City where Raf learned about art from places such as the Met and the Guggenheim Museum. Additionally, he was drawn in by gallery art shows where for the first time he witnessed the organic collision of multiple unique worlds into one place.
In addition to his artist career, Raf Simpson Co-founded FOAM Creative, which is an agency in New York City. Closely related to what inspires his work, Raf also Co-founded a furniture company named Haus of Hue with his wife Lauren - an online and in person retail business with multiple locations. When not painting, and working, Raf is an investor in Minority Entrepreneurs. He strongly believes in finding great talent and operators; real change comes from not only investing monetarily but investing time into a person – that creates major success while additionally getting to experience the process of an underserved community's ideas come to life.
Raf Simpson continues to be inspired by the people around him, and the City of New York. He uses his inspiration to invite viewers on a thought-provoking journey of enjoyment and exploration within his art.
